Placentia, California edged out Brownsville, Texas in a
low-scoring, 3-1 ballgame. Placentia’s Damian Mora pitched all seven innings
and only gave up a single run, leading his team to the Pony-13 World Series
Championship game.
A wild pitch brought in Evan Robliecki for the first run of
the game for Placentia. The wild pitch moved Briggs Berkson to third and
Jeffrey Conrad was able to reach base after striking out for Placentia. Joshua
Pugh brought Conrad and Berkson home, giving Placentia the early 3-0 lead.
There were a few scoreless innings before Brownsville got on the board themselves
in the fourth. Devin Parker hit a ground ball that bounced into the outfield
and allowed Juan Garcia to score for Brownsville.
Brownsville was getting a hold of the ball, but seemed to hit towards a
Placentia defender every time. They still had a shot to tie the game in the top
of the seventh with runners on second and third.
The runners went on a line drive that was caught by Placentia, though, and
Placentia was able to get the runner on second out for a double play to end the
game and give Placentia the 3-1 victory.
Placentia ended up winning the game while scoring all three of their runs in
the very first inning.
Damian Mora pitched all seven innings for Placentia,
allowing six hits with the single earned run while striking out five batters.
Mora’s pitching leads Placentia into the Pony-13 Championship Game. Their
opponent has yet to be determined.
The Pony-13 Championship Game will take place Monday, July 30 at York Field in
Whittier, California with a 7 p.m. start time.
