Hilo, Hawaii (USA) clinches spot in the 2019 Pony-13 World Series

West Zone Champs, Hilo, Hawaii (USA) secured a trip to the 2019 Pony-13 World Series Championship Game with a win over Tijuana (Mexico). Bubu Kawelu scored three runs and had four RBIs to lead Hilo to the 8-3 victory.

Kawelu got to work right away. He was the second hitter of the day and tripled to get himself in prime scoring position in the top of the first. Dominic Christensen brought him home two batters later to give Hilo the early 1-0 lead.

German Orozco got Tijuana’s offense going. Orozcco singled in the first inning but was able to make it to second after ran erred throw. Ariel Moreno was able to single in the next at bat and bring Orozco in for the tying run.

Hilo broke that tie rather quickly. The Kawelu and Christensen combo struck once again. Kawelu singled to start off the inning, then Christensen notched another RBI single. The run gave Hilo the 2-1 advantage.

Tijuana put themselves in a good position to take the lead in their half of the third. They loaded the bases following a couple of singles and a walk. Orozco wasn’t able to capitalize this time, though and Tijuana left three men on to end the inning.

Kawelu got his third hit in the game in the top of the sixth. Kawelu smacked a ball deep to the center field fence and rushed through the bases for an inside the park home run. Kawelu’s third run of the game extended the Hilo lead to two at 3-1.

Mexico cut into that lead in their half of the sixth. Alfredo Serena singled, then made it was to second on a passed ball. Thomas Martinez was batting and hit a ground ball. The Hilo fielder threw the ball carelessly, and Martinez reached second base while Serena came home to score.

Martinez found himself on third after a passed ball with Emiliano Brito up to bat. Brito partially hit a ball and it ended up in the hands of Hilo’s pitcher. The throw to first was short, though and Brito was ruled safe while Martinez scored to tie the game at three heading into the seventh inning.

Hilo was able to load the bases with two outs after an error, hit batter, and a walk in the seventh inning. Isaiah Justo came up to bat, stood patient and drew a walk to bring in Shane Sale-Silva for the go-ahead run. Brayden Malani also drew a walk in the next at-bat, and Hilo took a two-point lead.

Kawelu came up to bat once more and put the game away with a bases-clearing triple, making the score 8-3. The triple was Kawelu’s fourth hit of the game and it brought in his fourth RBI. Kawelu finished 4-for-5, with four RBIs and three runs scored

Hilo starting pitcher, Shane Sale-Silva went 4.2 innings and gave up seven hits. Sale-Silva was able to contain the Tijuana offense however, and only gave up a single run while striking out five batters.

Hilo, Hawaii punched a ticket to the 2019 Pony-13 World Series Championship Game with the win. They’ll wait for the winner of the Johnstown, Pennsylvania (USA) and Redondo Beach, California game to see who they face.
