Day 1 Recap of the Pony-13 World Series

The Pony-13 World Series kicked off today in Modesto, California with a four game slate scheduled for the eight teams in attendance.

Game 1 : Bani, DR 3, Alton TX 15 (5 innings)


Alton, Texas was victorious in dominant form as they routed Bani, Dominican Republic 15-3 in the first game of the World Series.


Leading the pack for Alton was Alexis Lopez who had 7 of the 15 RBI on three hits. The runs driven in came on a single in the first, a double in the fourth, and a double in the fifth. He was also the starting pitcher, striking out two while allowing no runs on three hits in his two innings of work.


The scoring started in the first inning for Alton, Texas when they scored two runs on the Alexis Lopez single and past ball. 


They were held hitless the next two innings before their offensive explosion in the bottom of the 4th. They crossed the plate eight times that inning with RBI coming from Martin Moreno, Robbie Rodriguez, Daren Bosquez, Alexis Lopez, and Brian Perez.


Bani responded in the fifth inning with three runs on a fielder’s choice and Adrian Martinez Cruz double, but Alton never let them have a chance as they pressed their foot on the gas even harder after those runs, scoring five more runs to make it to the twelve run mercy rule.


Alton, Texas moves to 1-0 in the World Series and will face Ramona, California tomorrow, July 24th at 4:00pm PST/US. Bani, Dominican Republic moves to 0-1 and will face Hagerstown, Maryland tomorrow, July 24th, at 10:00pm PST/US.

Game 2 : Manila, Philippines 2, Monterey, Nuevo Leon, MX 17 (4 innings)


Monterey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico scored early and often, downing Manila, Philippines in 4 innings, 17-2.


Monterey racked up 16 total hits in the game. Enrique Cuevas Garcia shined especially bright in a 3-3 effort that consisted of two doubles and a base hit. 


The scoring party started with a single by Roberto Saucedo Garcia, plating Ali Villa Garcia. Two additional runs were tallied on when Francisco Del Campo Rodriguez hit a two RBI single to make it 3-0. The top of the second was when the bats really started to catch fire for Monterey as they scored 6 runs on 7 hits. The offense never really let up from there, putting up seven more runs in the third and fourth.


Ali Villa Garcia started on the bump for Monterey, surrendering zero runs on zero hits in his one and a third innings.


De Venecia led Manila, Philippines in hits, going 1 for 2 at the dish.


The win puts Monterey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico at 1-0 and sets their matchup with host Bel Passi PONY in Game 8 starting at 7:00pm PST/US tomorrow. Manila’s loss puts them at 0-1 as they look ahead to tomorrow’s matchup against Covina, California at 1:00pm PST/US. View Box Score Here


Game 3 : Hagerstown, MD 2, Ramona, CA 3


A Pony-13 classic was made in this extra-innings game between eventual winner Ramona, California and Hagerstown, Maryland.


The 3-2 affair was a gunslinger’s duel as Ramona sat down eleven batters while Hagerstown struck out ten. Noah Bedia earned the win on the mound for Ramona, surrendering two runs on five hits in his eight innings of work. He struck out eight. Alex Wilson earned the save.


Andrew Weaver was the losing pitcher for Hagerstown, allowing two hits and one run over his three innings pitched. He struck out four. Ryder Linn started the game, going six innings and allowing two runs on four hits. Linn struck out six.


Weaver led Hagerstown at the dish with two hits in three at bats. Ramona had six total hits with Parker and Derek Taylor each having multi-hit games.


No hit was more important than the one given up in the top of the ninth where Aaron Gonzales Bautista singled, scoring Bedia.


Ramona, California will move to 1-0 and move on in the winner’s bracket, taking on Alton, Texas at 4:00pm PST/US. Hagerstown, Maryland falls to 0-1 and will face Bani, Dominican Republic at 10:00pm PST/US.

Game 4 : Covina, CA 2, Bel Passi PONY 3


In the battle of California, host Bel Passi PONY bested Covina, California by a score of 3-2.


Covina had the lead from the fourth inning on before Bel Passi mounted a comeback in the seventh. Down 2-1, Peyton Wallace drew a walk, sending the tying run home. In the eighth, Hudson Walker hit a walk-off single to send Bel Passi to the next round of the winners’ bracket.


The pitchers shined in this one, with Bel Passi striking out eight and Covina sitting down 18. Joseph Alvarez started the game for Bel Passi, surrendering two runs on one hit in his three and a third innings pitched. He struck out eight batters before the winning pitcher, Joban Hans, entered the game in relief. Hans pitched four and two third, allowing three hits and no runs, also sitting four down.


For Covina, Nathan Arello started the game and went six innings while allowing one run on five hits. Arello was slinging, sending 14 batters back to the bench with strikeouts. Marez came in the game in relief for Arello in the seventh and earned the loss for his two runs given up on one hit in two and two thirds innings of work. Marez struck out four batters.


With the win, Bel Passi PONY will improve to 1-0 and face Monterey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico at 7:00pm PST/US on the second day of action. Covina’s loss drops their record to 0-1 as they will face Manila, Philippines at 1:00pm PST/US.
