Day 2 Recap of the Pony-13 World Series

Game 5 : Bani, DR 5, Hagerstown, MD 13


Hagerstown, Maryland rebounded from their tough loss yesterday with a win against Bani, Dominican Republic, 13-5.


Bani grabbed the lead in the top of the first, scoring three runs on doubles by S Castilla and C Rodriguez Lopez. That lead, however, was taken back in the bottom of the first when Hagerstown scored runs on a Landon Myers double, Chase Diller single, and Chase Costner single. 


The rest of the game was all Hagerstown as they compiled 12 total hits on the day for 13 runs. Brice Lowery, Lucas Byrd, Jeffrey Hamlin III, and Andrew Weaver all had multi-hit games.  


Bani had eight hits with Sergio Castilla and Marc Ascencio leading the way with a multi-hit game.


Hagerstown, MD’s record now sits at 1-1 and they will move on to face Ramona, CA tomorrow at 10:00am PST/US. The loss eliminates Bani, DR from title contention. Their final tournament record was 0-2.

Game 6 : Manila, Philippines 2, Covina, CA 6


Covina, California earned the win in their contest against Manila, Philippines.


Roman Spencer's triple scored two runs in the second inning for Covina. He scored himself the next batter after a passed ball. They tacked on their final three runs in the bottom of the third to make it 6-1 via two fielder’s choices and an error. Covina finished with four hits which came from Spencer, Aiden Ayala, Moses Gogue, and Nathan Arellano.


Gogue had a great outing on the mound for Covina, lasting five innings while allowing one run on three hits. He struck out six.


Christian Marantal went four and a third innings for Manila, striking out six while allowing four earned runs on three hits.


The three hits by Manila, Philippines were picked up by Cruz Garcia, Carlo Tobillo, and Tetsuya Acian.


The win puts Covina, CA at 1-1 as they move on to play Bel Passi PONY at 1:00 PST/US. With the loss, Manila, Philippines’ title chances have ended. They finished the tournament with an 0-2 record.

Game 7 : Alton, TX 9, Ramona, CA 6


Alton, TX continued their undefeated tournament bout with a win over Ramona, CA 9-6.


The high scoring affair was put on display in the fourth inning when Alton scored four runs. In that inning, four bats contributed to the RBIs. Those bats were handled by Robbie Rodriguez, Alexis Lopez, Daren Bosquez, and Fernando Gonzales.


Ramona’s biggest inning was in the sixth where they scored three runs as Derel Taylor, Tallon Ogilvie, and Zack Nightingale moved runners across the plate.


Alton, Texas had 13 total hits in the game with four players, Rodriguez, Gonzales, Luis Balderas, and Bosquez, picking up multiple hits. Ramona, CA had eight hits on the day with Alex Wilson and Nightingale collecting multiple hits. Wilson had the best day, going 3-for-4 at the dish.


With the win, Alton, TX improves to 2-0 and will face the winner of Hagerstown, MD and Ramona, CA at 4:00pm PST/US. Ramona, CA will fall to 1-1 and face Hagerstown, MD tomorrow at 10:00am PST/US.

Game 8 : Monterey, Nuevo Leon, MX 1, Bel Passi PONY 0


The closest game of the World Series took place in Game 8 when Monterey, Nuevo Leon, MX relied on a single run to take down Bel Passi PONY.


Pitcher’s on both sides had great performances. Enrique Cuevas Garcia started the game for Monterey, surrendering no runs on three hits over two and two-thirds. He struck out five before he was replaced by Jose Garcia Jasso. Garcia Jasso pitched three innings, giving up no runs on no hits, sending six packing. Garcia Jasso’s phenomenal performance set up Ali Villa Garcia for the save. 


The lone run came in the bottom of the fourth inning when Garcia Jasso singled, scoring Cuevas Garcia. Another notable performance for Monterey came from Roberto Saucedo Garcia, who went 2-for-3.


Bel Passi threatened in the last inning with a leadoff double by Peyton Wallace, but after advancing to third on a fielder’s choice, he was caught stealing at home. Wallace ended the game going 2-for-3 with two doubles.


Monterey, Nuevo Leon, MX improves to 2-0 with the win while Bel Passi PONY’s record drops to 1-1. Monterey will play the winner of Covina, CA and Bel Passi PONY tomorrow at 7:00pm PST/US. Bel Passi’s competition against Covina, CA will take place at 1:00pm PST/US.
