An instant classic battle between Monterey, Nuevo Leon, MX and Alton, TX belongs to Alton by a score of 4-2 thanks to clutch hitting and a stellar pitching performance.
Alton broke the game open in the bottom of the second inning, scoring four runs. They scored two on a Devyn Gonzalez double that brought home Fernando Martinez Renovato and Daren Bosquez. A Luis Balderas bunt brought home the third run. Their fourth run was scored on a Robbie Rodriguez sacrifice fly to make the score 4-0 in Alton’s favor.
Monterey threatened in the top of the fifth when they loaded the bases, but Alton got out of it unscathed. Almost all of the rest of the innings were just like that one for the Alton pitching staff, as Devyn Gonzalez went four and two thirds while allowing no runs on five hits, striking out four. Daren Bosquez came in in relief for Alton.
Monterey finally struck off of Alton’s Bosquez in the top of the seventh on two errors. He was replaced by Alexis Lopez who shut the door on the last inning comeback.
Enrique Cuevas Garcia pitched the game for Monterey, going six innings while allowing four runs on six hits and striking out seven. Despite the second inning, the outing was a good one for the hurler.
Bosquez led the Alton team in batting, going 2-for-3 while Devyn Gonzalez led the team with two RBI.
Monterey didn’t win the game, but the performance of Jose Garcia Jasso was noteworthy as he went 2-for-2 with a double. Cuevas Garcia had the lone RBI for the team.
The win keeps Alton, TX unbeaten as they finish their tournament 4-0. They officially earn the title of 2022 Pony-13 World Series Champion.
