Day 3 Recap of the Pony-13 World Series

Day 3 action kicked off in Modesto, California as teams look to punch their ticket to tomorrow’s championship game.

Game 9 : Hagerstown, MD 0, Ramona, CA 2


Ramona, CA uses a two-run fifth inning to propel them to a shutout victory over Hagerstown, MD, 2-0.


The runs came via a two RBI single by Justin Jarrett, scoring Alex Wilson and Derek Taylor.


Jacob Parker started on the bump for Ramona, going five and two-thirds innings in the shutout performance. He allowed no runs on four hits, striking out ten. He was relieved by Wilson who went one and one-third, allowing no runs on one hit and sending two packing. Wilson earned the save for his efforts.


Landon Myers started the game for Hagerstown, going six innings and allowing two runs on five hits. He struck out three in the effort. He was relieved by Chase Diller in the seventh who allowed no runs on no hits.


Both teams played great defense as there were no errors in the game.


The four hits by Hagerstown came from Andrew Weaver, Mannix Brookens, Myers, and Diller. Diller doubled.


With the win, Ramona, CA will improve to 2-1 and move on to face Alton, TX later in the day during Game 11. They will have to beat them twice in order to move into the championship game.


Hagerstown, MD’s tournament ends with a record of 1-2 as they are eliminated from the tournament.

Game 10 : Covina, CA 4, Bel Passi PONY 6


A back and forth game belongs to Bel Passi PONY as they pulled ahead in the seventh to defeat Covina, CA, 6-4.


Covina scored their first two runs in the first inning on a Roman Spencer single that scored Aiden Ayala. They scored their second run on a wild pitch.


Bel Passi responded in the top of the third inning with a Peyton Wallace double, plating Javin Randhawa. They didn’t let up there, sending home two runs on a pinch hit Joseph Alvarez single in the top of the fourth to grab the lead. 


Peyton Wallace handled the starting duties on the mound for Bel Passi, pitching five innings and allowing two runs, both unearned, on five hits while striking out nine in the process. He was relieved by Gus Munoz who lasted one third of an inning before he was replaced by Robert Jurado. Jurado got out of the inning, but not before Covina, CA knotted it at four on an Ayala walk and Spencer single.


Bel Passi broke the tie the next inning in the top of the 7th when Ramon Hinojosa doubled to take the lead by one. Jurado later singled, bringing home Hinojosa to add an insurance run. The 6-4 lead held up as Bel Passi took the game to move on.


Spencer led Covina with his 3-for-4 effort.


With the win, Bel Passi PONY improves to 2-1 and will face Monterey, Nuevo Leon, MX later in Game 12. They will have to defeat them twice to move into the championship game.


The loss puts Covina, CA’s final record at 1-2 as they are eliminated from the tournament.

Game 11 : Alton, TX 3, Ramona, CA 0


Alton, TX hangs on to their first inning lead to defeat Ramona, CA 3-0.


Romeo Franco hit a home run in the top of the sixth inning that sealed the deal for Alton, TX as it was added insurance for their shutout win. This was the first homerun of the tournament.


Alton struck early in the first inning on an error that plated Luis Balderas. They didn’t score again until the eighth on Franco’s homer and a Fernando Gonzales single that plated Javier Garza-Lopez.


Garza-Lopez was spectacular on the mound for Alton as he went six innings while only allowing two hits. He struck out six and walked two. In the seventh he was relieved by Devyn Gonzalez who earned the save for his one inning of work, allowing one hit while striking out two batters.


Alex Wilson also put together an impressive performance on the mound for Ramona despite suffering the loss. He went five and two-thirds innings giving up three runs on five hits. He struck out two. He was relieved by Joseph Fielder who went the rest of the game without surrendering a run.


The win puts Alton, TX at 3-0 as they move on to the championship game that will take place at 6:00pm PST/US. They will face Monterey, Nuevo Leon, MX.


Ramona, CA finishes the tournament with an even record of 2-2 as they have been eliminated from title contention.

Game 12 : Monterey, Nuevo Leon, MX 11, Bel Passi PONY 10


This back and forth nightcap game belonged to Monterey, Nuevo Leon, MX as they took the win over Bel Passi PONY on a walkoff single for a score of 11-10.


Bel Passi jumped out to an early lead when they scored in the first on a Robert Jurado single. They tacked on three more runs in the second on a Trey Jackson double, Peyton Wallace single, and Ramon Hinojosa single.


Monterey quickly added two of their own in the bottom of the second on a wild pitch and Fernando Quiroga Villafranca single.


The fourth inning featured three Bel Passi runs that seemed to put the game out of reach. The runs were scored on a walk and fielder’s choice, putting the game at 7-2 Bel Passi. Just as quickly as Bel Passi scored those runs, Monterey put up six of their own to take the lead. The runs were scored on a Quiroga Villafranca double, Ali Villa Garcia single, Jorge Benavides De Leon single, and Roberto Saucedo Garcia steal.


 Bel Passi continued the back and forth trend by scoring one in the fifth to tie the game at eight on a Hinojosa double.


Monterey broke the tie in the bottom of the sixth with a run on a J Benavides De Leon single, scoring Saucedo Garcia.


Bel Passi took the lead in the top of the seventh as Jackson doubled to set the table for a Gus Munoz single to tie the game and an error that plated Wallace.


The back and forth finally ended when Saucedo Garcia singled home two runs for the walk-off thriller win.


With the win, Monterey, Nuevo Leon, MX improves to 3-0 while Bel Passi falls to 2-2. Monterey will face Alton, TX at 6:00pm EST/US for the championship.


Bel Passi is eliminated from title contention.
