Hilo, HI (USA) defeats Tijuana (Mexico); Rematch set for Monday

Hilo, HI (USA) pulled away from Tijuana (Mexico) late Sunday night to hand Tijuana their first loss of the Pony-13 World Series. Loren Iwata hit a three-RBI triple in the sixth inning to secure the 5-1 win for Hilo.

There was very little offense for the first few innings. The first run wasn’t scored until the bottom of the fourth inning when Emiliano Brito singled on a ground ball to right field to bring in Leonardo Ramos for the first run of the game.

Hilo didn’t let Tijuana hold on to that 1-0 lead long. In the next half inning, a walk and an error put Loren Iwata and Liwai Correa on first and second. Isaiah Justo came up to bat next and crushed a ball deep to center field. Justo’s hit allowed Iwata and Correa to score and the runs gave Hilo the 2-1 lead after five innings.

The West Zone Champs, Hilo got right back to work in the sixth. Hilo loaded the bases following a single and a couple walks. Iwata was the next batter. He saw a pitch he liked and blasted it to the right field fence, clearing the bases and giving Hilo the 5-1 lead.

Hilo held on to the four-point lead and left day three of the Pony-13 World Series with back-to-back wins. Loren Iwata hit the game-securing, three-RBI triple in the sixth inning. Isaiah Justo had the other two RBIs for Hilo.

Hilo’s starter, Kolten McCallum gave the team 3.2 innings. McCallum only gave up one earned run to go with his three strikeouts.

Hilo, HI (USA) handed Tijuana (Mexico) their first loss of the 2019 Pony-13 World Series tournament. Now Hilo and Tijuana have to play once more on Monday at 1 p.m. PT to see who’ll advance to the 2019 Pony-13 World Series Championship Game.
